Cordelia Black lives a double life. By day, she’s an ambitious pharma rep with killer sales. By night, she hunts Southern Louisiana of bad men – ones who think they’ve evaded justice. Sure, maybe the evening news has started calling the mysterious missing men the result of a “serial killer”, but Cordelia knows she’s not a killer – she’s simply the karma these men deserve.

But when Cordelia discovers a flaw in her system of elimination, pressure heightens. It gets even worse when her best friend starts dating a man that Cordelia doesn’t believe is a good person. Soon enough she has to come face to face with all the choices she’s made – the good, the bad, and the murderous, because both her family and freedom depend on it

For someone who falls asleep watching ID Network true crime documentaries nightly, I was kind of all about the female serial killer (since you know, only 16% of serial killers are females). Was this realistic? Due to the way Cordelia gets away with stuff, I would hope not! But, it’s a super fun read, especially in audiobook!

When Cordelia has a bit of a hiccup, it was kind of fun to see how she goes about trying to hide and fix her mistake.

This book has humor, drama, and action all thrown in together alongside witty and fun characters of Coredelia’s chosen family. It’s fast paced and the audiobook narrator is highly entertaining.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes the suspense of thrillers but would like a bit of a humorous twist added to their reading.

Trigger Warnings: Family death, foster care system, mentions of assault

Ten years ago, Malik’s life changed forever when his mother mysteriously vanished into green smoke and he discovered he had uncontrollable powers. Now at seventeen, Malik’s kept his powers hidden, focusing on looking out for himself and his younger foster brother, Taye. However, after a daring act to rescue Taye, Malik’s found an unexpected connection to his magical ties and to a hidden magical university his mother attended.

At Caiman University, a door opens for a future Malik never could have envisioned for himself – one with magic, and one that includes Alexis, his first love. His search for answers about his heritage, his powers, and what really happened to his mother exposes cracks in the magical community – feuding covens, magical politics, forbidden knowledge, and buried mysteries. While digging, Malik also discovers the reawakened evil dating back to the Haitian Revolution.

I actually found this book through LaDarrion Willam’s TikTok, right as he was getting ready to publish it – I’ve only just now been able to read and review it. I knew I was going to like this novel, but I didn’t think I would love it as much as I did. This book is action packed and will keep readers turning page after page with anticipation as to what’s to come.

Overall, a wonderful POC magical YA novel written in a world that Malik is still learning about (so readers can too). I’m definitely keeping my eyes out for the second book in the series.

Sixteen years ago, six girls were born on the same day – they became friends in Sorrow, Louisiana until a rift between them occurred. Isabeau and Reuel remain best friends while the other girls separate. But when Reuel goes missing, the former friends gather once again.

Days later, Reuel returns sick and with no memory of where she was. Then, when another girl in their group goes missing, questions begin to swirl between the friends. What is their connection? And why are their moms, who seemed like they could barely stand each other, all of a sudden have started talking to one another?

I really enjoyed this creepy, supernatural YA read. It’s set in May, so springtime, but it totally gives off spooky season vibes (so, in all honesty, can be enjoyed in any season!).

This is my first read of Amanda Linsmeier but she writes really well – this entire novel played out like a movie in my head and I could vividly “see” all the locations.

The narrative is also pretty fast paced and catchy – I had a good chunk of time to read it on my third day of reading and couldn’t put it down until I finished.

Overall, if you’re looking for a spooky, supernatural, kind of witchy, YA horror read that’ll keep you turning page after page until you find everything out, this book is for you!
