Ember has always been different from the other dragons – he’s small, his roar sounds more like a sneeze, and when he tries to breathe fire, the villagers coo at him. Worried he will never collect a respectable hoard of gold, Ember sets out to the village, but gets caught in a rainstorm. An encounter with a friendly baker turns Ember’s fortune around as he soon discovers that the gold you make is much better than the gold you steal.

I have been waiting for this book to be released for ages! I’ve followed the author on Instagram for awhile and when she posted about Ember’s story getting published into a book, I knew I had to read it.

I have also been shoving this book into all my colleagues hands and telling them to read it while I’ve been carrying it around at work.

Overall – this is adorable. Please read it and try not to cry over how precious Ember is. I’m going to go find my own personal copy of this now.

Otilla has run away from terrible danger and has now found a big abandoned house in the middle of the dark forest. Her host, the skull, is afraid of something that comes every night. Can brave Otilla save them both? Filled with rich, monochromatic artwork, The Skull is a retelling of a traditional Tyrolean folktale.

I wish that I had these types of books as a kid – a bit spooky and dark, but still with a good story to it.

I absolutely loved the artwork of this story. The words were sparse but the art was amazing.

The author’s note at the end was also amazing – as a librarian myself, I love when others speak of our superpowers 🙂

Overall, this isn’t just a children’s book by any means. I think those of all ages will enjoy it. It’s a quick, quirky read that doesn’t really sit on horror, but definitely gives off spooky vibes.

When Lilo realizes his beloved plants won’t be watered while he’s on vacation, he decides to simply invent a machine that will water them for him. The job is easier said than done and Lilo gets discouraged by the setbacks, but his family has his back and teaches him valuable lessons with each one.

As a plant lover who struggles to remember which plant needs watering and when – even when I see my plants everyday! – I empathize with Lilo, especially when you’ve kept certain plants alive for a long time.

His determination to find a solution, even when there were setbacks, were encouraging, even to this adult.

This book is filled with a lot of trial and errors and Selma Benkiran explains all the steps and thought processes through it all. One of my favorites was:

“Forget perfect. Start with good enough. An easy solution that you can have fun inventing. Then make it better and better.”

That’s just something I feel like adults need reminding of too.

Overall, this book is engaging and informative for all ages. Parents will have fun reading to their littles.

The Prickletrim family are very proud of their perfectly trimmed and managed garden. They LOVE nature – as long as it’s controlled properly. But one day, their gardener can no longer stand their rules and quits. Finally free of the restrictions, the garden explodes, spilling its greenery into the Prickletrim’s house and every corner of their lives. Can the Prickletrim learn to live with nature?

This is so adorable and filled with beautiful and colorful garden illustrations. It’s cute to see the little hidden objects within the garden when it explodes and the Prickletrim’s are learning to live with it.

The story behind the greenery isn’t necessarily about gardens and nature, but more along with change and how to handle and live with it.

I’ve got a few small families I know who will love this book and I can’t wait for them to be able to get their hands on a translated copy here in April.

A children’s picture book about the power of words and how they can both hurt and heal. And how one can stand out while still feeling invisible.

This is such an adorable and lovely picture book. It’s recently picked up so many awards and there were a handful of my coworkers at the library that listed this as one of their favorite books this year, so I put a HOLD on it as soon as I could.

There’s not a ton of words in the story, I know it’s a picture book, but there were photos that didn’t need words that were beautifully drawn by Vashti Harrison.

I really appreciated the fact that the author acknowledged that, even when told certain words hurt them, people will still not accept that what they said did that, and that they need to step back and reevaluate how they go forward from that.

Overall, a beautiful and amazing story for children.

In this wordless graphic novel, a little girl picks an unusual flower from a bush in the forest. Overnight, the flower blooms and turns into a rose wolf, missing a leg just like the little girl is missing an arm. Together, the duo must go on a journey to find where they belong.

I love me a wordless graphic novel – so when I saw this on my library’s Hoopla, I immediately checked it out without even looking at the description (I already loved the artwork on the cover). I did NOT need to get teary eyed at nine o’clock in the morning!

This is so cute! And adorable!

The art is simple and easy to follow and of course, there are no words to it – just a heart in a speech bubble and a few “!”.

Overall, I’ll be recommending this book to others who enjoy just a cute, cozy, quick graphic novel read (I already did for three coworkers this morning).

Meowl-o-ween is about the neighborhood cats that move around the carved pumpkins and decorations in preparation of spooking the trick-or-treaters out on the streets. A lone kitten is overwhelmed by the crowds and gets separated from their mother.

Okay, this is just adorable. I couldn’t help myself.

A Halloween book with cats.

Adorable cats – with facial expressions and silliness.

I loved it.

Nice change of pace from the older books I was reading. Saw this in a librarian’s newsletter and immediately went and found it on our shelves.

Possibly going to buy myself my own copy – even though I don’t have kids, that’s how much I love it.
